Tourism in Goa - Department to pull up its socks

Monday, May 2, 2011

In a bid to give a boost to tourism in Goa, the Goa tourism department has decided to change its marketing strategy and promote Goa on a different scale to ensure that the state does not lose out to rising competition in the tourism industry.

The ride for the state of Goa in tourism was a pretty smooth one for many decades and the government of Goa had to do precious little to promote Goa as a tourist destination and the mere strength of Goa's beauty was its own marketing tool. However with rising competition, the Goa tourism department has finally woken up to the fact that if unattended, the tourism industry in Goa could get badly hit and miss out on the various opportunities which are available should the Goa government tap them.

The awakening has also been triggered by the fact that there has been a decline in the flow of tourists to Goa for the last few years which has made the department of tourism realise that all is not well. While the number of tourists from the United Kingdom who visited Goa in 2007-2008 was roughly around 1 lakh, the figure was cut by half for the year 2009-2010. The case was no different with figures of tourists for other European countries such as Finland, Italy, Denmark and Switzerland heading for Goa. However tourists from Russia favouring Goa as a tourist destination had increased.

The Goa tourism department has therefore decided to promote Goa on new frontiers and countries such as Japan, Germany, Scandinavian countries and Nordic countries besides the UK are expected to be given special attention. There is also a proposal to market Goa as a wedding destination. The change in the strategy is aimed at attracting tourists who have high spending capacities, to the land of sun, sea and sand, Goa .

The one thing I regret was that my work required an enormous amount of my time, and a lot of travel.
