Goa tourism department to explore new tourists

Monday, May 2, 2011

In their bid to tap the dormant tourism potential of Goa, the tourism department of the state is considering several options to re-invigorate the state's ability to attract tourists to Goa not only from all over the globe but also from the rest of India which is also considered as an option to woo domestic tourists to Goa.

The concept of promoting Goa as a wedding destination has taken favour as it has been observed that there are scores of tourists who get married in India and some are getting married in Goa. However there is no organised system by the government to tap this potential. Many NRIs have also been attracted to Goa as a wedding destination.
The tourism department of Goa has therefore conducted some road shows in the United states while releasing CDs which target NRIs to visit Goa. There is also a conscious desire to tap tourists from the United States. However this idea is expected to be deliberated further as there is plenty for the US tourist to choose in tourism from all over the world and against such competition, Goa needs to strategise carefully.

Advertising in the electronic media to promote Goa tourism has therefore taken steam and various cities in India are being identified to spread the tourism bug among middle class and higher middle class sections from the Indian tourists. It has been observed that Goa has already developed as a weekend destination for tourists from major cities of Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore etc who frequent to Goa on weekends and public holidays making it their favourite haunt for a speedy quick getaway. However, similar popularity has not caught up with second tier cities of India which is being identified as a prospective avenue for Goa tourism .

The tourism department of Goa will therefore undertake major advertisement campaigns in the rest of India to promote Goa especially in regional newpapers of the country to showcase the Goan spirit among the rest of Indians while understanding the need of tapping the Indian tourist who is continuously evolving as a major customer in the ever growing economy of India .

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.
